Solar Powered Cars

Solar powered vehicles make use of electricity produced from the
sun to control their engines. They are powered by solar energy
obtained from solar energy trapped by solar panels more
often than not placed on the roof of the vehicle. The function
of vehicles like this depend on batteries and specialized means
of conserving power. They must also allow for enough surface
area for the photovoltaic cells to help convert the sun’s energy
straight into electrical energy.

Solar vehicles are
not too pragmatic means of transportation at the moment but they
are projects sponsored by government authorities for engineering
exercises. They combine technology made use of in aerospace,
alternative energy and automotive enterprise.

The electrical system in the car is the most vital part of the
system because it is designed in a way that it controls all the
power that enters and leaves the system. The battery in the
solar vehicle plays the same role that a petrol tank plays in a
normal motor car helping to store power. The mechanical systems
are contrived in such a way to keep friction and the weight of
the car to a minimum while maintaining its strength

Solar cars are mostly used as race cars. These are frequently
fitted with gauges as seen in established cars. The car driver’s
main precedence is to keep an eye on these gauges in order to
quickly detect possible problems. Cars that do not have gauges
available for the driver’s use will almost always have wireless
telemetry which is an automatic transmission and measurement of
data from remote sources by wire or radio or other means .This
wireless telemetry allow the driver’s team to monitor the car’s
energy consumption, solar energy capture
and various other parameters and thus allow the driver to focus
his concentration on driving alone. Many solar race cars have
complex data acquisition systems that take note of the whole
electrical system of the car just as most cars have systems that
furnish the driver with vital details about the car

The arrangement of photovoltaic cells in a solar vehicle could
be in many forms: it could be horizontal, vertical, adjustable,
remote, trailer and integrated. Depending on the season, size of
the automobile and the automobile itself. The larger the array
s, the more power produced. The larger arrays can produce over 2
kilowatts for large automobiles

There are also solar bicycles and tricycles which have the
vantage of their low weight and can also make use of the energy
exerted by the foot power of the rider to supplement

energy. Nowadays, highly developed electric bicycles are
available and these use negligible power so much that it costs
little to buy the equivalent amount of solar electricity fed by
the solar panel on the roof. Thus, a simple vehicle can be
driven without making use of fossil fuels.

There are also solar powered boats and solar powered ships in
operation in various parts of the world ,their decks are used to
place the batteries.
